The Disclosure Dilemma: Using AI for Research vs. Writing
Distinguishing between AI-assisted ideation and AI-generated text remains a core challenge for educators.
An instructor suspects a student used AI to generate a paper topic and conduct research, though not to write the final essay. The course requires disclosure of any AI use, making non-disclosure an academic integrity issue. This highlights a nuanced reality in modern education. We frequently overstate the danger of AI writing the paper, while understating the impact of AI shaping the inquiry itself. If a machine frames the research question, the student’s critical thinking is compromised from step one. For teaching, syllabi must clearly differentiate between using AI as a brainstorming partner and using it as a ghostwriter. What to watch is how institutions develop granular disclosure frameworks that acknowledge AI's role in the invisible early stages of learning, not just the final submitted product.
